Xabi Alonso Set to Replace Ancelotti at Real Madrid Amid Champions League Setback

The defeat to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey and Real Madrid’s underperformance in the Champions League has intensified scrutiny on Ancelotti’s leadership. Despite winning La Liga last season and a stellar track record at the club, Madrid’s failure to secure silverware in two of Europe’s most prestigious competitions has put significant pressure on the veteran coach. His future at the club now hangs in the balance, and an early exit from European competition has prompted Madrid’s hierarchy to consider other managerial options, with Alonso being linked to the job.

Alonso, a beloved former player who won multiple titles with Madrid, has impressed as a manager in his first major role at Bayer Leverkusen. Under his guidance, the German side has seen a tactical renaissance and a marked improvement in performances, leading to speculation that the club’s former midfield maestro could be set for a return to Madrid, albeit in the dugout.

Reports suggest that Alonso has already submitted a list of potential signings that could help shape the future of the squad, should he take over the reins. Among those names is Bayer Leverkusen's talented playmaker, Florian Wirtz. Wirtz has been one of the standout performers in the Bundesliga this season and has long been admired for his creativity and vision. Alonso, who has worked closely with the young German, is keen to bring him to Madrid, where he could provide the creative spark Madrid needs in midfield.

In addition to Wirtz, Alonso is reportedly interested in bringing in Jonathan Tah, the powerful centre-back from Leverkusen, as well as Martín Zubimendi, the defensive midfielder from Real Sociedad. Tah, who was once close to a move to Barcelona, is now seen as a more likely candidate to join Madrid given the financial troubles currently facing the Catalan club. Zubimendi, a player who has been a consistent performer in La Liga, could bolster Madrid’s midfield options and add much-needed depth.

One of the primary concerns for Madrid moving forward is the goalkeeping situation. Current backup goalkeeper Andriy Lunin has failed to convince many at the club, and reports indicate that the club is in the market for a new shot-stopper. A replacement for Lunin could be a priority, particularly as Madrid looks to ensure solid competition for Thibaut Courtois, who has been in excellent form but is in need of a reliable backup.

Alongside the pursuit of a new goalkeeper, Alonso is said to be keen on strengthening the wing-back and central midfield positions. Madrid’s aging defence, along with inconsistent performances from some of their midfielders, have left the team in need of fresh blood in these key areas.

While Alonso’s potential move to Madrid has yet to be confirmed, the growing speculation surrounding Ancelotti’s departure suggests that significant changes could be on the horizon for the Spanish giants. A managerial switch would likely signal a new era for Madrid, one which could see the club shift its focus to younger players and a more dynamic playing style, in line with Alonso’s approach at Leverkusen.

For now, Real Madrid fans will be anxiously awaiting the outcome of their team's remaining fixtures, hoping that the club can salvage something from the season. However, the growing expectation is that a managerial change will be imminent, and if Alonso is indeed given the opportunity to lead, Madrid could soon see a new direction in both tactics and player recruitment.
